Volo Bog


Volo Bog in Ingleside, IL is an amazing place and one of my family's and my favorite places to go out in nature. One of the few bogs in Illinois, it is also the state's only open-water quaking bog and the most famous peatland in Illinois. From the open water in its eye to the wetland at its border, Volo Bog has every stage of peatland succession. From Royal Catchfly in the parking lot to Purple Pitcher Plant in the Tamaracks, it supports many rare and threatened plants. From bog flies in the many cattails to Milkweed Tussock moth on, well, the milkweed, it is a refuge for many once abundant but now fairly rare insects. And from the lush mats of sphagnum moss to the Oak-hickory woods surrounding the peatland, Volo Bog is a mushroom hotspot. And don't forget about the lichens all around the nature preserve and Broadleaf Arrowhead sprouting up anywhere there's peat!
