10.31.26 Dam No. 4 Woods- East, Park Ridge, IL (crusts, mold, and stereum)

On the Halloween of 2026, I attended the Illinois Mycological Association's Haunting in the Woods survey for fungal specimens. I saw a lot of new fungi and collected many specimens. They even selected one of my samples to bring to the Field Museum for genetic testing! I had a lot of fun.

A mushroom in the Stereum ostrea species complex. I will just call it stereum in this post

Lots of stereum

A very vibrant stereum in a different species as the stereum at the top of the post.

Even more stereum

Maybe stereum. If so, yet another species in the Stereum ostrea complex.

Same stereum species as at the very top of the post

Crowded Parchment, a species in the genus Stereum that is NOT in the Stereum ostrea complex

The sample they selected to bring to the Field Museum for genetic testing. It was my favorite sample, so I was really excited when I found out that they decided to genetic test it and bring it to the field museum!
