Red-spotted Admiral on roadkill

I probably saw like 30 Hackberry Emperors alone on horse dung and this roadkill in 5 minutes of driving here. It's a well established fact that butterflies, mostly males generating minerals for a nuptial gift to the female, "mud-puddle". The butterflies are probably going after horse dung because it looks like mud and the sandy soil can't turn into mud and soaks up puddles.

Red Spotted Admiral and Hackberry Emperors

Hackberry Emperor and a Question Mark butterfly. Note the silver question mark symbol on the wing of the butterfly with that name.

Look at the beautiful Hackberry Emperor. Ignore the disgusting horse donuts

Wings out!

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY POOP BUTERFLIES!?!?!?!?!?

Unidentified Jumping Spider in the genus Pelegrina. It was stalking Northern Fungus Farming Ants, waiting for the perfect time to pounce at breakneck speed. The viscous Pelegrine Spider!

Pecan Spittlebug on my dad's hand

Look at that fun lil' guy

A majestic Eastern Giant Swallowtail

Weeeeee!!

wwwwhhooooOOOOOOooosshhh

Hackberry Emperor on aa garbage can. Finally, a butterfly only on the implication of grossness, not straight-up dung

Decapitated cockroach under the plexiglass cover of an info kiosk. Of course.

Unidentified Soldier Beetle. Its coloration looks just like a firefly, and when I got it on my finger to get a good look, I could even see it had a pale green butt to mimic a firefly's glowy butt!

Red-eared slider on the road, way uphill of Mud Lake/Illinois River, and going into a really thin farmside Prairie. Your supposed to move road turtles in the direction they're going, but this one was not going somewhere sensible. Anyway, when dad moved it into its tiny little grassland, it dumped a gallon pee. What the heck, turtle.
Note: when moving a snapper or softshell (both massive turtles; snappers are really spiky with big beaks, softshells look like melted plastic bags with big hog noses), poke their butts with sticks or something or lift up their back shell a bit. Both will try to bite your fingers off, which will happen if you aren't carefull. With other turtles, just watch out for the pee. And always just move them where they;re going so they don't get confused or just cross again.

Fun water pump

Beautiful view of Mud Lake where it splits off from the Illinois River
