Weird decayed wood

Emerald Ash Borer. Welp, I guess this tree was another victim to the emerald ash borers

Fun lil' holes in the wood

More Emerald Ash Borer holes.

If you break a Cottonwood twig where it bulges and has a bunch of rings, you'll find a big star inside. It works better if you cut it with a pocket knife or shears. This is a living, spongy layer of pith that transports nutrients. Please cut twigs you find off the ground, don't pull any off the tree.

Cool decaying wood and lichen
