Black Swallowtail

This butterfly is "mud puddling". This behavior is when a butterfly (usually a male) probes wet soil that would normally be to hard to probe to suck up essential minerals. If the butterfly is a male, he presents it to a female when mating as a "nuptial gift". This allows her to give her eggs the essential nutrients they need to grow she wouldn't get from her nectar diet. The adults are ephemeral and purely reproductive, so they only need nectar to burn the sugar in it to make energy for movement

...nom nom nom nom

While the red milkweed beetles on the lower right are mating, the one on the upper left is eating. It also has its right forelimb planted firmly in one of its own turds while is actively defecating.

All I need is two spots and a bumblin'

Bumble away!

Fast bumblin'

A very elegant Double-crested Cormorant

The Cormorant is a very sleek and athletic creature, not much of a bumbler. Can't say the same about turtles. (Except for snappers)

Wow, so many (painted & red-eared slider) turtles
