| A Great Black-backed Gull on the ice. What a magnificent bird! The world's largest species of gull, it's so big it eats puffins and small ducks! Coastal wildlife managers have to control their population so other birds can a chance to nest- and sometimes just to survive. They weigh 2 lbs 14 oz (1 kilo 300g) to 4 lbs 6 oz (2 kilos). They're 2' 4" (71 cm) to 2' 7" (79 cm) long. And finally, their wingspan is 4' 9" (1 m 46 cm) to 5' 3" (1 m 60 cm). That's bigger than a Red-tailed Hawk! |
